I like the sun shine to hit the hives. My plastic wind wrap is just the black stuff used to wrap suitcases and by couriers to wrap pallets. I feel the warmth. I note the bees have tended to be that side of the hive too. But not a scientific comment.
Certainly those apiaries in the sun make for warmer local climates and the bees get out more.
The heating and cooling argument i don’t buy into. The bees know the weather and won’t fly if it’s not suitable.
So are you on the coast. It’s a lovely state but then i have only been in New England area in autumn. Winters sound interesting.
Very warm and unseasonal here in Massachusetts today. We had record cold for 24 hours last week. I wrapped them for a short bit. I have been feeding the clusters with pollen patties and sugar on warm sunny days. I have great direct sun on them so hope to see some movement too.
